FAQ

What do I need in order to use a marine telephone?

If a marine telephone is installed on board, ministerial permission is required for keeping transmission and receiver equipment. You can apply for a licence from: the Belgisch Instituut van Postdiensten en Telecommunicatie (BIPT), ASTRO - Toren, Sterrenkundelaan 14/21, 1000 Brussel, tel. 02/2268888. The application must include a technical outline with the diagrams and the homologation number of the appliances. Licences will only be granted for the use of approved types of appliances.

The person who operates the marine Telephone must possess a ‘shipping station radio and telephone limited licence’. This licence is also issued by the BIPT. To register for the marine telephone examination, you should contact the examination commission on one of the following numbers:

  • 02/2268853
  • 02/2268856
  • 02/2268857

The international name for pleasure sailing vessels is allocated by the BIPT to owners of ships with Belgian nationality. A certified copy of the flag letter is required. The names allocated to the pleasure sailing vessel always begin with the letters ‘OS’ followed by ‘2’ letters or four figures.
